Although the number of people using cheques is falling, last week the Payments Council did a U-turn when they announced that cheques will no longer be axed by 2018. We're now told that cheques will continue for as long as there is a need for them, and this doesn't just apply to the elderly and most vulnerable in society. Cheques are also very important for many small businesses and charities that actually rely on this payment method. Perhaps if the Payments Council had listened to public opinion in the first place they wouldn't have had to make this embarrassing U-turn. Now we need to think about the effect of the ending of the cheque guarantee scheme...
